More old news i guess...

Once you have the iVisualize 1.6 plug-in installed (see previous post),
here's another interesting [and free] quartz composition made for iTunes:

NowPlaying_v1.1   <-- just drop it in the /Library/iTunes/iVisualize folder.

NowPlaying (from 2007) doesn't have any prefs in the "composition settings" area,
but... be sure to check out its on-screen options:

? - to toggle the help menu
 ` - to show/hide the CD case
 r - to toggle auto-rotation
 t - to show/hide the timeline
 s - to show/hide the spectrum
 w - to show/hide the waveform
1 - to toggle the warp factor [space] module
2 - to toggle the flight [clouds] module
3 - to toggle the ocean [fish] module
4 - to toggle the inferno [fire] module

Unfortunalely, it reverts back to the defaults on each invocation... but it's still nice.

These two (from 2006) are worthy of a test run as well:

  • [Tim Kosse's] FileZilla - free FTP solution

  • Mozilla Sunbird - [experimental?] iCal-like calendar, based on Mozilla Calendar

  • [Bartek Bargiel's] iGTD - (i Get Things Done) powerful GTD-like organizer

Interesting... last version out of LaCie was v1.1.4 in June 2005 I liked the progress meters it would display.
(haven't looked at this version 2 yet though)

Also interesting, VTracker has put this new version on a new page.
Here is the >old page< if anyone wants to peruse its past reviews.

Just heard of a free open-source backup program over at google code called "mathusalem".

[haven't studied or tested it yet myself]

[also has extended features that cost $25... but the free part is amazing enough, for most users!]

SCREEN SAVERS:
  • XScreenSaver recently updated to version 5.08 (over 200 freeware screensavers ported from the X11 Window System). As i have mentioned elsewhere, BSOD, Carousel, and Flow are my favorites (when B.S.O.D. puts up the OSX kernel panic display, it might make your heart stop for a few seconds)... but, there are a few other interesting ones: BouncingCow, Endgame, Molecule, Superquadratics, and FlyingToasters (reminiscent of After Dark).

  • Also really mind-blowing is the "Lotsa" Screen Savers series... comprised of LotsaEscher, LotsaGlass, LotsaSnow and LotsaWater. Play around with and stare at LotsaEscher long enough, and you can actually lose your balance.
cool
